Article about what is bad about SmashingMagazine.com

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Here is a link to an article that the guy over at Drawar wrote about the state of the design community with some punches thrown at smashingmagazine.com.

I like this piece of writing. I think he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder, or at least it comes off that way to me, but his points are valid. It mainly deals with how one site, smashingmagazine.com has spawned a ton of copycat sites, to the point where you stop caring about any of them.

One of his “things” is the list type articles that they do. There is no real discussion on design as a whole. The community has pretty much become “Where are the 50 images of sites? You must suck if your article doesn’t show at least 30 things”. I would agree. In fact if you look at smash’s site now, you can find tons of list articles like 50 free buttons or 50 wordpress themes. Those would be fine, if like this author says, the people writing those articles wrote why each of those 30 things are there…why they are great, or why they suck.

Personally I like articles that show a problem in web design, and then tell you how to fix the damn thing. Which is what I try to do here even though all I seem to get is a lot of freakin’ spam. Its also hard to find the time to write something that you hope people will find some use of. I try though.

Anyway, if you are reading this, check out the article….its a good read.

Installed code highlighting…

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

As you can see, I have installed code highlighting….now I just have to change the styles.

Been a while…here’s what I’ve been doing.

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

So…it has been a while since I have last posted. And a lot has happened…went to Origins (board gaming convention in Columbus, Ohio), went on a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters on the Canadian border, my brother-in-law got married…lots of stuff.

I do plan on posting a lot more, and I realize no one is reading this, but maybe one day I will actually have people responding. Who knows.

What else is new? Been reading the Dune series again. Specifically the prequels by Frank Herbert’s son Brian, starting with the Butlerian Jihad. I have read on other forums, blogs and such that Brian’s writing is not good. I would disagree. I think people are just comparing him too much to his father. He writes NOTHING like Frank Herbert…and that is good, because no one could write like Frank could. Brian and his co-author Kevin though, have there own style, and I really like the continuation of the story arc in their style. They are more fast paced, but without all the philosophy. I seriously recommend them to any fans of the Dune books. Oh…and I am also one of the 7 people in the world who actually LIKED the David Lynch movie. Take that to the bank and cash it!

Other than that, obviously looking for more free-lance work. On to other posts though.

So, WordPress is cool…

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

As you can see, I have learned how to customize my WordPress blog. I can now also use that knowledge to use it as a content editor. It is actually pretty easy to use. Oh, and for those reading this, if any…if you know how to use the Pods plugin, can you please tell me? Cause their documentation/support is complete CRAP!

Luckily I have figured out how to use the widgets in multiple sidebars. This will allow me to do multiple editable areas.

All in all, WordPress ROCKS!

Set up my Google Adwords…

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

I set up my adwords campaign last night. I’m sorry, but if you don’t know what you are doing, it is not an easy thing. It must be very confusing to someone who is not that competent using the internet. I got it running though, so let the freelance work come!
